HOCl is considered by the FDA the agent that has the highest bactericidal activity against a broad range of microorganisms (US FDA, 2015)

In October 2002, the FDA cleared hypochlorous acid (HOCl) as a high-level disinfectant. (FDA, personal communication, September 18, 2002).

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations (21 CFR Part 178) permit the use of HOCl sanitizing solutions on food processing equipment and food contact surfaces.

The following provisions must be followed:

  • Equipment or articles sanitized with the solution must be allowed to drain adequately before contact with food.
  • Solutions used for sanitizing equipment shall not exceed 200 parts per million (ppm) of available chlorine.
